About Gifted and Talented
In 2022, Alkimos College was proud to be Western Australia’s 24th school to be chosen to offer the Academic Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Program. Students sit the ASET (Academic Selective Entrance Test) in Year 6 to gain placement in the program for Year 7 at Alkimos College. Our Gifted and Talented students learn with like-ability, like-minded peers from expert teaching staff in Mathematics, English, Science and Humanities. The GAT program is academically rigorous and educators may use compacting, extension or enrichment methods to enhance student outcomes. Students are encouraged to find their areas of passion and ignite these with project-based and inquiry learning experiences.
Engagement and Support
At Alkimos College, we understand that Gifted learners may face unique challenges in their educational journey or may be identified as Twice Exceptional. Some students may struggle at times with underachievement or disengagement. Our GAT Program Coordinator, Specialist teachers, Learning Support and Student Services staff provide a holistic approach and endeavour to meet the needs of each individual child, to ensure that they achieve their personal best. This may include tailored Individualised Education Programs, providing socialisation support or mentoring.
WA country students who are accepted into our Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Program may be eligible to apply to board at the Department of Education’s City Beach Residential College.
Opportunities and Enrichment
We take pride in ensuring our Gifted learners are provided with regular opportunities to show off their skills or build new areas of passion or interest. Some of the exciting opportunities provided to our Gifted and Talented cohort in 2022 included:
